Deepening Insight: An Interview with Bhikkhu Anālayo

December 17, 2021

A discussion with Bhikkhu Anālayo about his book "Deepening Insight: Teachings on vedanā in the Early Buddhist Discourses."

Deepening Insight presents a selection of passages from the early Buddhist discourses that provide perspectives on the cultivation of liberating insight into vedanā, sensation, feeling, or feeling tone. For meditators, such passages can be of considerable help as a reference point for deepening insight.

A metaphor that can offer considerable help when facing vedanās describes bubbles arising on the surface of a pond during rain...they arise and soon enough burst and disappear. Contemplation of the changing nature of vedanā provides a firm foundation for the growth of insight into not self. Such insight proceeds through successive layers of the mind's ingrained habit of self-referentiality. Based on relinquishing the explicit view of affirming the existence of a permanent self, increasingly subtler traces of conceit and possessiveness need to be successively overcome until with full awakening all selfing in any form will be removed for good.

Interview with Manish Chopra, author of "The Equanimous Mind (2nd Edition)"

December 10, 2021

The Equanimous Mind by Manish Chopra
.

The Equanimous Mind (2nd Edition) chronicles the author's first ten-day Vipassana meditation camp experience at the end of 2010 and the life-changing impact it has had on his personal and professional life since that time.

This new second edition comes at an important milestone in Manish's journey as ten years have passed since that first ten-day retreat. A new epilogue in this 10th anniversary edition has been expanded and enriched with updates on his progress since the journey began a decade ago.

Stepping forward with an act of daring confession, Manish Chopra tells us in detail what was wrong with his life, and how, by learning Vipassana meditation, he reoriented every waking moment to be in greater harmony with himself, life, and truth.

The Equanimous Mind has a particular heartwarming quality because of the earnestness with which the author seeks to grow into being the best possible person he can be. Many people will benefit from this volume of clear sentences, deep feelings, and important messages.

Out of gratitude for the benefits the author has received from the practice of Vipassana meditation, he will be donating the proceeds from this book to spreading awareness about the technique, so that others can draw value from it as well.

A Lifetime Doing Nothing: Tales, Teachings, and Testimonials

December 03, 2021

A Lifetime Doing Nothing by Ian McCrorie
.

"In my experience, all our problems do indeed stem from this hyperactive and delusional thinking we have acquired over time.

There is a way to eradicate the light-speed, blind reactions and the habitual confusion. The way is very simple. It boils down to just two words: do nothing. That s it. Do nothing. Sit quietly in a room alone and do nothing. Watch the monkey mind and do not try to fix it or eliminate it or drown it out or engage it.

This is doing non-doing. Observe the mind, on autopilot as usual, screaming editorial comments from the sidelines like some frenzied play-by-play announcer and do nothing about it. Don't turn the monologue into a dialogue. Do nothing. 'Nothing to see here, folks. Let s keep it moving.'"

Vipassana Meditation and the Scientific Worldview (2nd Edition)

November 26, 2021

Vipassana Meditation and the Scientific Worldview (2nd Edition) by Paul R. Fleischman
.

We have lived in an era during which the spirituality intrinsic to science has become obvious.

The universe is not random. It contains patterns and paths. This is called the information-state of the universe, and it organizes the materials and energies that form our bodies and minds. We are each microcosms; downloaded into our small selves are a vast array of directives and limits, the laws of science, that govern stars as well as our hearts and minds. We can gain access to some of the wisdom of this universal, lawful reality through meditation. As we observe our body sensations with equanimity, we come in contact with basic laws of physics, like entropy, or the decay of aggregates over time, and we also encounter basic laws of psychology, like the fact that social love, Mettā, leaves us happier than anger or fear. We may become self-balanced to face contingencies.

It is science, not mysticism or religion, that reveals the value of Vipassana as a vestibule to ultimate realities, and highlights it as a practical guide to the psychology of well-lived lives. We are each unique snowflakes, patterns and lace, melting in the cosmic storm. We arise and pass inside a universe, a web, a Dhamma. We become aware of the scriptures that are inscribed inside us and that guide our wellbeing.

S.N. Goenka and Vipassana

March 26, 2020

S.N. Goenka (1924-2013), the renowned teacher of Vipassana meditation, undertook an extensive teaching tour of North America and Europe in 2002. This documentary originally made for Dutch television includes his address to business leaders at a New York City conference, talks at the Belgian Vipassana Center, and interviews with practitioners who described the benefits of Vipassana.

Every year more than 100,000 people attend Mr. Goenka’s 10-day courses in Vipassana. This ancient technique continues as a modern tool for transformation. Sayagyi U Ba Khin: a talk by Patrick Given-Wilson

July 02, 2018

In this video, Patrick Given-Wilson explores the life of Sayagyi U Ba Khin the foremost lay teacher of vipassana meditation in Burma and S.N. Goenka's teacher. He achieved extraordinary results with his students in short periods of time, and combined this with a stellar career as a senior civil servant in Burma, at times holding six to seven different senior government positions. He had a strong conviction that "the time-clock of Vipassana has now struck" for the worldwide revival of the Buddha's path to liberation, and directed his considerable energy towards its fulfillment.

Ven. Ledi Sayadaw: a talk by Patrick Given-Wilson

February 17, 2018

"Ven. Ledi Sayadaw was the first vipassana teacher that we know of in this tradition in modern times with such detail. His great innovation was to start spreading the actual practice widely and to householders."

In this video, Patrick Given-Wilson explores the life of this meditation master and magnificent pariyatti scholar who authored over a hundred expositions on the Dhamma. He was perhaps the most outstanding Buddhist figure of his age. All who have come in contact with the path of Dhamma in recent years owe a great debt of gratitude to this scholarly, saintly monk who was instrumental in reviving the traditional practice of vipassana, making it more available for renunciates and lay people alike.
