Interview with Manish Chopra, author of "The Equanimous Mind (2nd Edition)"

December 10, 2021

The Equanimous Mind by Manish Chopra
.

The Equanimous Mind (2nd Edition) chronicles the author's first ten-day Vipassana meditation camp experience at the end of 2010 and the life-changing impact it has had on his personal and professional life since that time.

This new second edition comes at an important milestone in Manish's journey as ten years have passed since that first ten-day retreat. A new epilogue in this 10th anniversary edition has been expanded and enriched with updates on his progress since the journey began a decade ago.

Stepping forward with an act of daring confession, Manish Chopra tells us in detail what was wrong with his life, and how, by learning Vipassana meditation, he reoriented every waking moment to be in greater harmony with himself, life, and truth.

The Equanimous Mind has a particular heartwarming quality because of the earnestness with which the author seeks to grow into being the best possible person he can be. Many people will benefit from this volume of clear sentences, deep feelings, and important messages.

Out of gratitude for the benefits the author has received from the practice of Vipassana meditation, he will be donating the proceeds from this book to spreading awareness about the technique, so that others can draw value from it as well.

Buddhist Therapy

May 20, 2021

Buddhist Therapy by Ruth Walshe
.

"Is Buddhism closely related to psychology? To some extent, yes - but with one tremendous difference: While psychology helps you to understand yourself intellectually and, at best emotionally, Buddhism helps you to get beyond the intellect to the actual experience of life itself. That's why applied Buddhism goes so much deeper than any school of psychology can ever claim to do…"

An Exhortation and Self-image or Self-knowledge Two Dhamma Talks by Ayya Khema
.

Let go of all self-images, of all ideations, of all hopes and plans. Then you can dwell in this particular moment—and no one can take that away from you. It can’t disappear, or be broken, or get lost. It just is. Security lies in the simple fact that in essence one has nothing and one is nothing.

The Buddha—A Unique Teacher

March 17, 2021

The Buddha—A Unique Teacher
from Bodhi Leaf No. 36 by Francis Story

History has produced many great figures, but none in this present cycle or time as impressive and memorable as that of Siddhattha Gotama, the Sakyan prince who became the world’s greatest spiritual guide. He was unique as a personality, and unique as a teacher. There have been countless Enlightened Ones before him and there will be more, as long as saṃsāra endures, but he is the only one of whom we have actual historical knowledge, and his life has been a source of wonder and inspiration for more than twenty centuries. It continues to be so today.

Why the Buddha Did Not Preach to a Hungry Man

March 09, 2021

Why the Buddha Did Not Preach to a Hungry Man
from Bodhi Leaf No. 121 by Louis van Loon

What makes one man poor and another rich is not only a question of material possessions, how much they consume or the extent to which they are able to satisfy their cravings. This is determined largely by the manner in which they subjectively experience and psychologically evaluate a feeling of well-being in the context of the environment in which they happen to be situated. Indeed, “poverty” and “affluence” are largely relative terms: quantitatively, a well-to-do member of a primitive Bushman society is still desperately poor compared with an urbanised African who may well own a radio, a guitar, a good suit and some cattle at his homeland kraal. He, however, is appallingly destitute when his lifestyle is contrasted with that of a white artisan who, in turn, envies the earning capacity—and everything that goes with it—of a Johannesburg business executive who, however, may well earn— and be able to afford only as much as a New York dockworker.

Deeper Aspects of Sīla

June 12, 2020

An ethical life is composed of purity of action, purity of speech and purity of livelihood. Upholding it requires not only determination but proper comprehension as well. From the perspective of abstaining (vārittaṃ) to the perspective of performing (cārittaṃ), this talk aims to support the understanding of the deeper aspects of Sīla. Integrating selected quotes from the direct words of the Buddha and the commentaries, it highlights the different aspects of Sīla, proceeding in the order of the precepts. It addresses the detailed definition of each precept, the underlying volition of the act to be performed, its manifestation and its results.
