A Lifetime Doing Nothing (Story 43 excerpt)

Story 43 from 'A Lifetime Doing Nothing' by Ian McCrorie
.

The question remains, however, why is practice so difficult? To begin with, doing non-doing is by and of itself difficult because to be still and just watch goes against our very nature. This is especially true when...

A Lifetime Doing Nothing (Story 41 excerpt)

October 02, 2022

Story 41 from 'A Lifetime Doing Nothing' by Ian McCrorie
.

You need to walk before you run. This much is certain. There is an old joke of a tourist lost in New York City who asked a passerby how to get to Carnegie Hall. He was told, “Practice, my boy, practice.” This process can appear to be slow going. This is quite normal, as the progress is incremental. (And meditation practice redefines incremental.) It can seem at times...

Pariyatti Presents... Debra Barrett - Realizing Change Video Series

March 22, 2022

This series is inspired by a book we first published over a decade ago, entitled Realizing Change: Vipassana Meditation in Action (by Ian Hetherington). In Realizing Change we are given access to voices from around the world, who share in-depth accounts of their apprehensions before undertaking a ten-day course in Vipassana, their experiences during the course, and the subtle, yet profound, experience of change activated by the practice of Vipassana. People from every walk of life, country, culture, and age have found Vipassana a steady anchor in the gale-force winds of change that buffet us. By facing reality head-on through direct observation—rather than reacting—impermanence itself becomes the very medium of transformation.

Along the same lines, in this new series of Pariyatti Presents… events, Vipassana meditators come and share their personal stories.

In this recording, fellow meditator Debra Barrett talks about the positive impact Vipassana Meditation has had on her life. Debra does not shy away from serious topics such as substance addiction and the difficulties Indigenous people face, and we are positive you will find her story captivating, educational, inspiring.

Pariyatti Presents... Deepening Insight: An Interview with Bhikkhu Anālayo

December 17, 2021

A discussion with Bhikkhu Anālayo about his book "Deepening Insight: Teachings on vedanā in the Early Buddhist Discourses."

Deepening Insight presents a selection of passages from the early Buddhist discourses that provide perspectives on the cultivation of liberating insight into vedanā, sensation, feeling, or feeling tone. For meditators, such passages can be of considerable help as a reference point for deepening insight.

A metaphor that can offer considerable help when facing vedanās describes bubbles arising on the surface of a pond during rain...they arise and soon enough burst and disappear. Contemplation of the changing nature of vedanā provides a firm foundation for the growth of insight into not self. Such insight proceeds through successive layers of the mind's ingrained habit of self-referentiality. Based on relinquishing the explicit view of affirming the existence of a permanent self, increasingly subtler traces of conceit and possessiveness need to be successively overcome until with full awakening all selfing in any form will be removed for good.

Pariyatti Presents... An Interview with Manish Chopra, author of "The Equanimous Mind (2nd Edition)"

December 10, 2021

The Equanimous Mind by Manish Chopra
.

The Equanimous Mind (2nd Edition) chronicles the author's first ten-day Vipassana meditation camp experience at the end of 2010 and the life-changing impact it has had on his personal and professional life since that time.

This new second edition comes at an important milestone in Manish's journey as ten years have passed since that first ten-day retreat. A new epilogue in this 10th anniversary edition has been expanded and enriched with updates on his progress since the journey began a decade ago.

Stepping forward with an act of daring confession, Manish Chopra tells us in detail what was wrong with his life, and how, by learning Vipassana meditation, he reoriented every waking moment to be in greater harmony with himself, life, and truth.

The Equanimous Mind has a particular heartwarming quality because of the earnestness with which the author seeks to grow into being the best possible person he can be. Many people will benefit from this volume of clear sentences, deep feelings, and important messages.

Out of gratitude for the benefits the author has received from the practice of Vipassana meditation, he will be donating the proceeds from this book to spreading awareness about the technique, so that others can draw value from it as well.

Buddhist Therapy

May 20, 2021

Buddhist Therapy by Ruth Walshe
.

"Is Buddhism closely related to psychology? To some extent, yes - but with one tremendous difference: While psychology helps you to understand yourself intellectually and, at best emotionally, Buddhism helps you to get beyond the intellect to the actual experience of life itself. That's why applied Buddhism goes so much deeper than any school of psychology can ever claim to do…"
