Pāli Reading Group
at Vipassana Aranya

The Vipassana Aranya is located outside Jaipur, India, and was conceived to address a need within the Vipassana community of the S.N. Goenka tradition: a place for serious students to live the ‘monastic life’, a life of paṭipatti with pariyatti, for extended periods of time.
This coming March, the Vipassana Aranya opens its doors for students of Pāli to get together and read from the ancient texts.
Please note that this is not a Pāli course, and there will not be a Pāli teacher present. It is, rather, a chance for intermediate (or above) students of Pāli to get together (with the help of a facilitator) to discuss, read and learn the words of the Buddha in a peaceful atmosphere surrounded by nature.

The daily schedule of this program will include three group sittings and two group study sessions. Such a long and focused time devoted to pariyatti and paṭipatti together, amidst the companionship of mature fellow meditators, and in the calm and solitary setting of the Aranya is expected to be a unique and valuable experience.

Khantī ca sovacassatā, samaṇānañca dassanaṃ;
Kālena dhammasākacchā, etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.

Forbearance, accepting guidance, beholding saintly people,
Discussion of the Dhamma at the proper time — this is the highest welfare.

Code of Conduct & Additional Information

  • One is expected to follow the basic Code of Conduct that is maintained at a Vipassana center.
  • As noted earlier, there will be no Pāli teacher on-site, only a facilitator for the group study, so in order to achieve an active and productive group study experience, applicants are expected to have an intermediate level of Pāli knowledge, and familiarity with grammatical terms. If you have doubts as to whether you are qualified to join, please fill out the application form and provide details of your experience with Pāli.
  • The group will be limited to a maximum of 6 men. We cannot accommodate women at this time as there are currently no suitable facilities at the Vipassana Aranya for hosting both men and women.
  • Participants are requested to bring along a laptop (if possible), as we might use them for the study sessions.
  • Accommodations are single rooms with attached bathrooms.
  • The program will start with a one-day course. Sundays may be used either for a Vipassana self-course or self-study.
  • Participants are requested to maintain complete silence in the residential area; visiting each other’s rooms is not allowed. Outside the study sessions, when speech is necessary, it should be limited to the concerns at hand, or to Dhamma-related discussions; and should take place only in the dining room-office area. This will promote a deeper and more rewarding experience for all participants.
