From Large Print Runs to Print-on-Demand |

|
|
A lot changed in Pariyatti’s publishing over the 40 years we have been in existence. In the early days, publishing was a capital-intensive labor of love. Thousands of dollars had to be invested upfront to pay for large, offset print runs. The larger the print run, the lower the cost per book, so deciding how many copies to print was always a challenge as we did not want to tie up too much money in inventory, but we wanted to minimize the cost per book. |
These large offset print runs left us with many copies of slow-moving books sitting on our shelves for years, and required us to have a large warehouse to store them. Also, shipping books from the USA to customers worldwide was expensive and slow; at times the cost of shipping far exceeded the cost of the books purchased. |

With Amazon KDP not available in Latin America, Pariyatti's print books are generally subject to high shipping costs to that part of the world. Editorial Mudita offers many of the titles that Pariyatti publishes in Spanish, available for direct sales in Mexico, the rest of South America (shipping costs apply) and Spain (via Ibero Difusion). |

I recently completed my sixth 10-day silent meditation course in the Goenka tradition. Each one gave me something special such as a new relationship to suffering, a deeper experience of the power of silence to hold everything, or the question: What if everything I’ve ever thought has been wrong? Likely, my experience is not unique. I came, I observed suffering, I saw a way out of suffering. Continue reading...

Dhamma Sirī—The Prosperity of Dhamma |
At the end of a quiet rural road in Kaufman, Texas stands the Southwest Vipassana Meditation Center—or, in Pāli, Dhamma Sirī, “The Prosperity of Dhamma.” It started off in 1990 as a single-family house on 20 acres of land. Today the center has a campus of 186 acres, and it is fully equipped to welcome more than 125 meditators and servers. Dhamma Sirī is just 60 miles east of Dallas–Fort Worth. Continue reading... |

Journey to the East, 1972 |
I find it very curious that now in my fiftieth year I’ve been practicing Vipassana meditation for more than half my life. Twenty-five years ago, my wife Gail and I began a journey to the East that would turn out to be a transforming one in every sense of the word.
Someone once said that your education only begins when you start to travel. Ours commenced a few weeks after our marriage in 1972 with a flight to Europe.

Song by Michele Richardson |
Mama V and me on the highway, Ocean breeze and a quiet prayer. SeaBreeze nights, Pier 16, One Love breakfast — I was almost there. Dad called early, said I was wrong, But something in my spirit stayed strong. I walked into silence with shaking hands, Ready to meet myself again.

Fact: The Treasures of Pariyatti section on our Website offers a permanent repository and free access for students, researchers, historians, scholars, and the general public to the historical collections that comprise the post-commentarial writings on the teachings of the Buddha. The prime focus of the project is to preserve and disseminate the texts and other forms of media that have gone out of print or are otherwise in danger of being lost to the ravages of time. |
