The Majjhima Nikaya, or "Middle-length Discourses" of the Buddha, is the second of the five nikayas (collections) of the Sutta Pitaka. This nikaya consists of 152 discourses by the Buddha and his chief disciples, which together constitute a comprehensive body of teaching concerning all aspects of the Buddha's teachings. Ranging from basic ethics to instructions in meditation and liberating insight, these teachings unfold in a fascinating procession of scenarios that show the Buddha in living dialogue with people from many different strata of ancient Indian society. Replete with drama, with reasoned argument, and with illuminating parables and similes, these discourses exhibit the Buddha in the full glory of his resplendent wisdom, majestic sublimity, and compassionate humanity.

This thoughtfully translated and organized volume is the cornerstone of any Buddhist library. The Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha is a companion to the equally essential The Connected Discourses of the Buddha, The Long Discourses of the Buddha, and the 2005  Discourses of the Buddha.

This volume of Wisdom's Teachings of the Buddha series has received Choice Magazine's 1995 Outstanding Academic Book Award and the Tricycle Prize for Excellence in Buddhist Publishing for Dharma Discourse.

Mr.

Majjhima Nikaya is 1 of 5 Nikayas consisting the Discourse Basket of the Tipitaka. I have been reading Majjhima Nikaya for several years. Here, I found that the discourses are neither too short nor too long, but just right. I just bought one for a dhamma friend who enjoys reading it very much. One, who is serious about learning the Buddha teaching should avoid reading books that are written by a scholar, because I found that they almost always insert their own opinions in them. One should go strait to read the Tipitaka which contains the words actually spoken by the Buddha.

A wonderful and easy-to-read insight into Buddha's teaching

I bought the book after the Digha Nikaya, the Samyutta Nikaya and the Sutta Nipata and I am very much happy about it. The discourses have a very wide range of subjects and they are very easy to read. The short lenght of the discourses make them very accessible: I suggest that this is a good starting point to start reading the Buddha's discourses. There are so many suttas in where the Buddha face different people, different strata of the Indian society of that time and so many situations...there are even sections named "Question and Answers" which may sound very familiar to Vipassana meditators. Here you can find many famous episodes from the Buddha's life (e.g. Angulimala) and many important suttas about meditation. The most amazing thing for me reading the book was to discover the simplicity of the Buddha's teaching and the presence of the progressive training (sila, samadhi, panna) given to monks and laymen, everywhere around the Suttas. I also was struck by his sense of humour: in many places it is just amazing to see how intelligent and clever this person was in answering questions. A fundamental book for everyone who wants to approach the Buddha's words.
