The qualities of the Buddha are innumerable, but the Buddha only mentioned nine attributes in his discourses, as this was best suitable for his audience. Buddhist monks and nuns often memorize and recite the P i text of the attributes, and contemplate on them. The attributes are applicable to one s daily life; contemplation and thorough understanding of their meaning helps one to live a moral life. Since the Buddha's time, the meaning of each of the nine attributes has been explained extensively over time in both P i and Burmese. Due to these lengthy explanations, scholars wishing to find out the original meaning of the individual attributes faced many difficulties.

Sayagyi U Kyaw Htut made a careful study of the P i text of the Five Nik yas for more than twenty years; in The Nine Attributes of the Buddha he uses a selection of both P i and Burmese words to clarify the attributes, while maintaining their original meaning. His explanations are clear and concise and support the reader to really focus on and appreciate each attribute by itself.
